    Holland Construction Services racked up about $150 million in projects last year with a focus on multifamily, senior living, K-12 education and medical services. For 2019, the company wants to continue to expand on its multi-family work while focusing more attention on warehouse/distribution clients, according to Scott Schanuel, senior director of business development.
    In September, Swansea-based Holland broke ground on a new mixed-use project in Edwardsville called Whispering Heights. Located on Illinois Route 157, the approximately $30 million, 170,000-square-foot project will feature a mix of retail and residential units. Straddling the entrance to the Enclave apartment complex, each building will have retail and restaurant space on the first floor and luxury apartments on the remaining five floors. Both buildings will feature a rooftop “amenity deck” with outdoor lounge seating, fire pits, and barbecue grills that will connect to an indoor lounge area. The development will also include a clubhouse and fitness room.
    The south building is scheduled for completion by fall 2019, followed by the north building in early spring of 2020.
    Last fall, Holland completed construction on a similar but even larger project called Chroma Apartments in the Grove neighborhood in the city of St. Louis, adjacent to the Cortex Innovation District. That development boasts a score of amenities including an outdoor pool and hot tub, a fitness center and a game room.
    Another large project for Holland last year was the Fairview Heights Recreational Complex (The REC). The firm broke ground in October 2017 on the $17 million, 58,000-square-foot facility. Set for completion this spring, the structure will house the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, a full aquatic center with a pool, children’s splash area, large slide and lazy river, and a family-friendly Clip ‘n Climb center. A full fitness center will include weights and exercise machines, plus group fitness rooms. A running track will look down onto two basketball courts that can be used for volleyball or pickle ball. Outside, there’ll be a running track, soccer fields and walking trail.
    “The thing that fuels our growth is our relationships,” Schanuel said. “We’ve always been a relationship company. Most of our work is either with a repeat client or somebody who’s referred to us by one of our repeat clients. We are also committed to working locally within the St. Louis region. Opportunities for work outside of St. Louis will come from our existing relationships, but we’ll never turn our backs on the local market.”
