Project manager Matt Sauer with McCarthy Building Companies Inc. admits it can be tough renovating an existing building.
“You never know what you might uncover,” he said. He is overseeing the $15 million to $20 million renovation projects at Sarah Bush Lincoln Hospital in Mattoon.
He and his team have encountered several challenges throughout the project. They have relocated utilities, including medical gas lines, and electrical and mechanical services uncovered as part of the renovations. Each relocation required close coordination between McCarthy, architect BSA LifeStructures and Sarah Bush Lincoln. But he said he has been doing renovation work a long time and every job site has its challenges.
There are currently four projects underway. The team plans to complete the Behavioral Health unit project by the end of this month and the OB/GYN and pediatrics floor renovation by next summer. That project is 75 percent complete and they are getting ready to turn over phase two. To date, McCarthy has turned over eight patient observation rooms, seven acute care units, one labor and delivery room, a C-section suite and a nursery.
This year work began on the sterile processing and material management alterations project and the parking improvement project, with a planned completion date of 2018. His team has completed phase one on each project and is getting ready to move on to phase two. Together, the four projects will cost a projected $15 million to $20 million.
The $25 million cardiology and bed expansion project is currently bidding and will be ready to start construction in December. This will add approximately 70,000-square-feet of building space to the southeast portion of the main hospital, and will consist of a new catheterization lab suite, 21 new patient rooms and a gym.
Matt and his team really enjoy working with Sarah Bush. “They’re a great team,” he said. “We have a good relationship with each other.”
