EDWARDSVILLE - Alton area attorney Philip B. Alfeld has been appointed associate judge to replace Dean Sweet, who retired effective May 30.

Chief Judge David A. Hylla made the announcement Tuesday on behalf of the judges of the 3rd Judicial Circuit.

Alfeld earned his law degree from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 1980. Alfeld has been an assistant state's attorney for the Madison County State's Attorney's Office and a special assistant attorney general since 1989.

Alfeld was a sole practitioner from 1995–1998. He was a partner with the firm of Kardis, Forbes & Alfeld from 1988-1995 and of counsel with Schrempf, Kelly, Napp & Darr, Ltd from 1998 to present.

Alfeld's previous employment includes partner in Carlson & Alfeld, PC from 1986-1988, Associate with Talbert, Carlson & Mallon, PC in 1986 and associate with Paul L. Pratt, PC from 1981-1985.

Alfeld is a current member of the Illinois State Bar Association and the American Criminal Justice Association. He is the past president, vice president, treasurer, secretary and member of the Alton-Wood River Bar Association. He is also a past member of American Bar Association, Madison County Bar Association, Greene County Bar Association, American Association of Trial Lawyers and Illinois Trial Lawyers Association.

Alfeld is a member of the Criminal Justice Advisory Board for Lewis and Clark Community College and has been an instructor of Constitutional Law at Lewis & Clark Community College from 1991 until present.

"I am pleased to have a person of Phil Alfeld's ability and experience joining us on the Madison County Bench. He will be a great addition," Hylla said.

Alfeld and wife Amy have lived in Godfrey for 20 years.
